DERBY — McPherson’s eighth-grade girls stormed into the finals of the Pioneer League Postseason Basketball Tournament on Tuesday with a convincing 49-32 victory over Salina Lakewood.
The Bullpups’ size was simply too much, as Andrea Sweat scored 19 points, Lakyn Schieferecke added 13 and Cassie Cooks just missed doubles with nine.
“The girls came out and played a very good game and did a great job sticking to our game plan,” MMS coach Jay Crawford said. “Lakewood had a scorer that we knew we had to stop and if she got off to a hot start we knew we were going to run a box-and-one on her. She got off to a good start in the first quarter with seven points and between Stacey Pham and Avery Mayfield, held her without a point after the first quarter for the rest of the game. When we went on our runs it was because of our defense. The ladies played very hard and our goal at the start of the season was to make it to the finals of our tournament.”
MMS, 14-1, plays for the championship at 6:30 p.m. Thursday against Hutchinson, which outlasted Derby 36-32 in the other semifinal.
MMS (49) — Carlson 2, Tice 2, Mayfield 2, Johnson 2, Cooks 9, Schieferecke 13, Sweat 19.
