DERBY — The No. 1 seed of the Pioneer League’s 7th-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament is gone, thanks to the McPherson Bullpups.

Salina South, the pre-tournament favorite, was toppled by the Bullpups 35-29 in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Max Alexander scored nine points and Aaron Powell chipped in with seven as MMS improved to 10-5 on the year.

“Being down 11-10, we made a couple of halftime adjustments, but mainly we stuck with our game plan of hounding their best player,” MMS coach Tim Hein said. “We took a deep breath, gathered ourselves and started knocking down shots in the second half. We outscored them in the third quarter, 14-2. That was enough to bring us home with a victory. EJ Hein and Eli Pyle showed their fitness level tonight. They took turns hounding their top player at the point, while the other one ran the court side to side guarding their two other guards. Aaron Powell gave us a nice athletic spark off the bench.”

MMS plays Salina Lakewood at 5 p.m. Thursday for the championship. MMS lost the first meeting between the teams as Hein said the Bullpups will be giving away a lot of size.

MMS (35) — M. Alexander 9, Powell 7, J. Alexander 6, Pyle 5, Labertew 5, Hein 3.
