DERBY — McPherson’s seventh-grade girls completed their unchallenged run to perfection on Thursday by routing Derby North 44-25 in the championship game of the Pioneer League Postseason Tournament.
Derby North hung tough for a quarter, down just 11-8, but the Bullpups moved out to a 21-10 halftime lead. By the end of three quarters the margin had mushroomed to 15.
“What a great way to end the season,” said MMS coach Jacque Gehrt, whose team finished 15-0 with nearly every game a runaway victory. “This group of girls has been a pleasure to coach and it has been fun to see them grow and improve. Undefeated league champs is an awesome way to introduce McPherson girls basketball to the Pioneer League.”
Kassidy Beam scored 11 points and Belle Alexander chipped in with 10 to spark the victory.
“We had another well-balanced game,” Gehrt said. “Eight of the 12 girls who played, scored. Derby North has a great player who scored 16 of their 25 points and we slowed her down a little more once we went to a box-and-one. I am proud of our defensive effort. We blocked out pretty well and had numerous offensive rebounds and putbacks. Our girls played tough and kept attacking on offense all game long. We shared the ball well again and other than a few careless passes, we handled their pressure and maintained our composure.”
MMS (44) — Beam 11, Alexander 10, Godwin 6, Kynaston 4, Bell 4, Allen 4, Pyle 3, Diggs 2.
