DERBY — In a lockdown defensive battle, Hutchinson outlasted McPherson’s eighth-grade girls 27-20 Thursday to win the championship of the Pioneer League Postseason Tournament.

The loss gave MMS a 14-2 final record, both losses coming to Hutchinson.

“The girls came out ready to play and went right after them,” MMS coach Jay Crawford said. “We played with a lot of energy to start the game and I was proud of how we competed. Just like in our first game that we lost to them, we were tied once again at the half. Both of our games were a mirror image of each other in that we struggled to score in the second half. This team came a long way in how they went about competing and understanding how important it is to play as a team. This group will continue to get better and I wish them the best of luck in all they do.”

Cassie Cooks led the Bullpups with eight points.

MMS (20) — Strathman 2, Schieferecke 4, Sweat 6, Cooks 8.
