Bullpup girls blaze by El Dorado

During his McPherson High playing days, Jordan Crawford was normally on the right end of a 60-23 score.

But as the coach of the El Dorado girls on Tuesday, he unfortunately had to watch his  alma mater firing on all cylinders as MHS clinched a tie for the AVCTL Division III title and moved to 15-2 overall.

The Bullpups, 8-0 in league games, came out red-hot by making 10 of 16 shots in the first quarter and were active on the defensive end as they were turning steals into layups as it was 21-2.

"A big key (to the defense) was getting some buckets early," MHS coach Chris Strathman said. "We were able to get into our press. If we weren't making buckets, we were getting into our halfcourt trap. It led to some good things. I was pleased with the first half, especially."

Taylor Robertson, despite being guarded much of the time by two players, hit 7 of 8 shots in the first half to score 17 and with her time somewhat limited in the second half, she finished with 24.

Ashtyn Schieferecke had several put-backs in the game and tied her career high with 16 points and also pulled down eight rebounds.

"She definitely finished well tonight," Strathman said. "She was just very, very active. Some of them probably felt like they fell into her lap, but she was going to the right spots to make that stuff happen."

One more plus was a nice stat-stuffing performance by Mandi Cooks, who started to look like the Cooks pre-Andale injury. She did a little bit of everything with seven points, six rebounds, five steals and two assists.

The Bullpups had 12 assists alone in the first half as they continually made the extra pass to often score at point-blank range.

Just two quarters were played in the JV game because of a lack of numbers for El Dorado, with the Bullpups cruising to a 26-9 victory.

Riley Hett scored 10 points and Rylee Schrader added eight.

There was no freshman game, again due to El Dorado not having enough players.

The Bullpups return to action Friday for the annual “Think Pink” game against Hutchinson. It’s also homecoming.
