HUTCHINSON — McPherson’s ninth-grade boys were pushed to the limit on Thursday by tourney host Hutchinson before outlasting the Salthawks 48-43 in the semifinals.
MHS, which plays Hutch again today at the Roundhouse as part of the regular season, advances to Monday’s title game.
“We managed to find a way to win tonight,” MHS coach Treg Fawl said. “All four quarters we had to battle. I told them before the game Hutch will flat-out get after it. They are always physical and they play hard. I thought how we closed out the game really showed our toughness as a team.”
Jace Kinnamon had his best game of his career with 16 points and Kyler Hoppes chipped with 10.
“I thought Jace and Kyler did a really good job of keeping their composure tonight,” Fawl said. “Hutch pressed us the entire night and they both handled it well. (Gabe) Hoover did an exceptional job defensively in the second half, guarding their best player. Aren Trost had a key rebound in the last minute of the game and was able to knock down two clutch free throws. Overall, I was pleased with how we as a team closed out the game.”
MHS (48) — Kinnamon 16, Hoppes 10, Hoover 9, Trost 6, Wilson 3, Wiard 2, Avila 2.
