TOPEKA — McPherson High’s Eric Gaeddert will race for the Class 5-1A state championship in two events on Saturday.

Gaeddert finished in the Top 8 of his two individual events to qualify for the finals. He had the fifth-fastest time in the 50 freestyle and was sixth in the 100 free.

Also on Saturday, Spencer Steinert will be in the consolation round of the 500 freestyle after finishing 11th in the prelims. Gavin Soukup just got in as he grabbed the 16th and final spot in the 200 freestyle.

The two relay teams did not advance, though the 200 freestyle team was .2 second off making the consolation round. Jori VanGoethem, in the 100 breaststroke, sliced 3 seconds off his best time, but did not advance.

“We have seen some great swimming and are looking forward to dropping some more time tomorrow,” MHS coach Matt Morrow said.
