MHS girls slog past Hutch

It may have been a case of too much too soon for McPherson High's girls here Friday on "Think Pink Night."

The Bullpups blew out to a 15-2 lead over Hutchinson early in the first quarter and immediately thoughts of a running clock filtered through the Roundhouse.

But the patient Salthawks scored the first nine points of the second quarter to get back into the game and it was competitive the rest of the way, with the Bullpups taking a 38-31 decision to move to 16-2 on the season.

The Bullpups survived a stretch where they missed 23 of 25 shots over the second and third quarters and finished the game just 11 of 42. Hutchinson did a great job on MHS' 20-point scorer Taylor Robertson, holding her to just three points and 1-of-8 shooting.

But Emma Yowell and Mandi Cooks picked up the slack. Both scored 11, with Yowell scoring all of hers during that early first-quarter flurry. Cooks shook off a leg cramp to complete a double-double with 10 rebounds.

"Emma had those 11 points in the first quarter and fortunately we were able to play with that lead the rest of the game," MHS coach Chris Strathman said. "Ashtyn (Schieferecke) did a nice job with several offensive boards, five of them in fact, and Mandi had seven offensive boards, which was huge for us, and she went 7 for 7 at the line and they were big, too."

Strathman gave credit to the youthful Salthawks for pushing his team.

"They battled back (from the 15-2 deficit) and made some shots," he said. "We couldn't get much separation. Fortunately we were able to get some stops, but they scored a couple of times pretty quick. We just couldn't get away from them."

The MHS JVs more than doubled the Salthawks 40-19 behind 10 points apiece by Riley Hett and Hannah Hageman.

The ninth-grade girls were a 49-23 victor. Lauren Hein and Maggie Leaf scored 10 points apiece.

MHS makes its final home appearance on Tuesday when it entertains Augusta. A victory or a Rose Hill loss gives MHS an outright AVCTL Division III championship as it has clinched a tie already.
