In the first half here Friday, the McPherson High boys turned the paint area for Hutchinson into a no-score zone.

MHS did not allow a single point in the lane in the first half, as nine of the Salthawks' meager 10 points came via the long ball.

That defense led MHS to a 32-10 lead and it went on for a lopsided 53-17 homecoming victory to move to 17-1 heading into the final week of the season.

"Defensively I'm not sure we could have (done any better)," MHS coach Kurt Kinnamon said. "I thought that was as good a defensive effort as maybe any team we've ever had. They're so hard to guard because they back cut, back screen and to be able to guard that you've got to be able to communicate."

Drew Pyle scored 15 first-half points, including 11 of the first 13, and went on to finish with 19 to lead MHS. Spenser Wine was a strong complement with 17 points.

MHS led only 7-6 when it took off on a 25-4 run to close out the half as the Salthawks went 8:47 without a point.

"They scored on three 3s (in the first half), but I told the guys usually we hurt people with our inbounds plays and they scored off four inbounds plays and when you only give up six field goals and four are off inbounds plays, they had pretty good sets on inbounds evidently," Kinnamon.

The MHS JVs steamrolled to a 66-37 victory behind 14 points by Wyatt Seidl, 12 by Clayton Gerbrandt and 10 by Paxton Leaf.

In the freshman game, the Bullpups and Salthawks played for the second time in less than 24 hours, but this time Hutchinson prevailed 44-35 after MHS had won in the semifinals of the Hutchinson Invitational on Thursday. Kyler Hoppes topped the Bullpups with 12 points.

MHS makes its final home appearance on Tuesday when Augusta comes to town. The Bullpups still have just a one-game lead in AVCTL Division III as Buhler is still nipping at their heels.
