GOESSEL — It wasn’t pretty to watch, but the outcome looked beautiful to the Canton-Galva boys.
Up just 6-5 after a quarter and down 16-15 at the half, the Eagles finally started to hum in the second half for a 36-29 victory over Goessel, their ninth of the year to match last season’s total.
“Defensively, we played a strong game,” C-G coach Shane Duncan said. “Kids were diving on the floor and getting to the 50-50 balls. We showed a lot of toughness on the glass, outrebounding them 36-26. Obviously it wasn't a pretty offensive game, but the guys gutted out a nice road win. I felt Lane Wiens and Clayton Sargent gave us some great minutes tonight defensively.”
Travis Unruh scored 15 points to lead C-G, while Zach Snow yanked down 11 rebounds.
The athletic Goessel girls sprinted to a 63-41 triumph. C-G stayed with the Bluebirds for a half, down 24-18, but a 20-9 third quarter turned the tide.
Brittany Nordstrom led the Eagles with 11 points, one more than Kelli Nightingale. Goessel limited the high-scoring Cassidy Enns to eight points, just two in the second half.
