TOPEKA — McPherson High’s Eric Gaeddert finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in his two championship events on Saturday at the Class 5-1A Swimming and Diving Championships.
Gaeddert was fifth in the 50 freestyle (22.36) and sixth in the 100 freestyle (49.66). To show the closeness in the 50, his time was a half-second behind the best time.
Spencer Steinert was 11th in the 500 freestyle’s consolation round (5:21.24) and Gavin Soukup was 15th in the 200 freestyle consolation (1:57.54).
The Bullpups were 19th out of 35 teams with 35 points. Class 5A Maize (280) outlasted 5A rival Wichita Heights by a half-point for the title. AVCTL member Rose Hill was third with 158.
“Our Saturday finalists swam well, dropping time in each race to a personal best and holding or improving on the placing after the prelims,” MHS coach Matt Morrow said. “It was a great year where we grew so much as a team and individually. I'm very proud of these guys for their work ethic as well as how they represented McPherson. Looking forward to next year.”
