WICHITA — McPherson College’s men’s tennis team started its spring season in strong fashion on Sunday with a narrow 5-4 victory over NCAA Division II and highly rated Newman University.

The Bulldogs went 2-1 in doubles and later had a 4-1 lead before the Jets came back with a pair of singles wins to close within 4-3. Hugo Ball-Greene then clinched the match for Mac at No. 4 singles.

The Bulldogs are the KCAC preseason favorite and have been ranked in the national poll after making a trip to the NAIA Tournament last year.

Mac is off until March 4 when it plays Cardinal Stritch University in Kansas City, a neutral site.
