HUTCHINSON — The smallest school carted home the biggest prize Monday night in the Hutchinson Invitational 9th Grade Boys Basketball Tournament.
McPherson High, the only 4A school in a field of mostly 6A schools, completed a 3-0 run through the tournament with a 58-45 victory over Maize.
Balance was a key as Gabe Hoover scored 18 points, Jace Kinnamon added 14 and Brandon Wilson tallied 10.
“I was extremely proud of how we played in the fourth quarter tonight,” MHS coach Treg Fawl said. “We were able to find that extra gear and finish the game strong. It is a good feeling to be able to win a tournament like this one. A lot of quality opponents.”
The Bullpups have precious little time to celebrate as they host Augusta tonight.
MHS (58) — Hoover 18, Kinnamon 14, Wilson 10, Hoppes 6, Avila 4, Trost 4, Brewer 2.
