MHS boys crush Augusta on Senior Night

McPherson High's Marcus McDaniel and Drew Pyle decided to put some spice into Senior Night Tuesday at the Roundhouse, where they have lost only once in three years.

With the game against Augusta in the bag, McDaniel got out on a fast break. He spotted the streaking Pyle, but was cut off by a defender. Instead of taking the difficult shot, he threw a pass intentionally off the glass to Pyle, who flushed it for a dunk.

It was that kind of special night as the Bullpups crushed the Orioles 76-39 to move to 66-2 in their last 68 games. They have clinched a tie for the league title at 9-0 and are 18-1 overall.

After the Bullpup girls scored 52 points in the first half of their game with the Orioles, the boys did themselves two better as they sped to a 54-19 halftime lead, making 22 of 31 shots for 70 percent.

The Bullpups made the extra pass as 13 of the 22 field goals in the half came directly off an assist. They would finish with 21 assists on the 32 baskets, which came on just 50 shots.

"It was a fun night, all of our seniors did some of the things we've come to expect," MHS coach Kurt Kinnamon said.

McDaniel provided the impetus on defense, while Pyle scored 20 points, making 9 of 13 shots. Jacob Loecker was 4 for 4 for eight points and Spenser Wine did all the dirty work.

Sophomore Ben Pyle added 15 points and freshman Jake Alexander had a career-high 14.

The Bullpups now gear up for Buhler on Friday, with the league championship on the line. Buhler is a game behind and needs a win to earn a share of title. MHS fans are implored to get down to Buhler early as seating will be limited, so Bullpup fans should head down and check out the freshmen games at 4:15.

The JVs romped to a 68-38 victory with Paxton Leaf scoring 13 points and Jake Alexander adding 10. A total of 11 Bullpups marked in the book.

MHS’ freshmen were up 57-26 after three quarters, but Augusta eschewed the running clock in the fourth quarter and did get within 71-49 by game’s end.

Brandon Wilson led the Bullpups with 20 points, Kyler Hoppes scored 16 and Tyler Stegman came off the bench for 10.
