SALINA — McPherson High’s Kaleb Jost came up one win short of making the Class 4A State Wrestling finals on Friday.
Jost was 2-0 to start the day before losing to Clearwater’s once-beaten Curtis Rylant 21-6 (technical fall) in the semifinals. He’ll try to come back with a chance to finish third on Saturday.
Also for the Bullpups, Austin Eldredge won his first match at 132 by a T-fall (15-0) before losing in the second round, 4-1.
Ty Goss, at 285, lost in the first round in a 3-2 tiebreaker, but came back to win by a fall. He could have a long day Saturday if he keeps winning.
Bryton Crews, at 126, lost by a fall in the first round, but came back to win by a fall to get a return trip on Saturday. Cole Kretzer, at 120, lost both his matches by falls.
For Smoky Valley, Austin Lustfield at 126 won his first two matches before losing to top seed Emmanuel Brown of Sumner 3-2 in a hard-fought semifinal. He still has a good chance to take third.
Beck Elliott, at 170, lost his first match, but earned a trip back by winning in the consolation round. Allan Wampler did likewise at 182.
Austin Golden, at 145, went 0-2.
Colby has 100 points and a huge lead over the 67 scored by second-place Pratt. Andale is in third with 65. McPherson is 22nd with 19 1/2 and Smoky Valley is 26th with 15. There are 53 teams represented.
