McPherson High and Smoky Valley learned of their sub-state basketball assignments on Saturday with no surprises.

The MHS girls, 18-2, are the No. 1 seed and play host school Ulysses (3-17) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The lead-in game at 6:00 matches Buhler (8-12) and Hays (7-13).

The championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday.

The MHS boys are in perhaps the toughest sub-state of all in 4A Division I as three of the four teams were ranked in the Top 10 in the final KBCA poll.

The Bullpups take a 19-1 record into Friday’s 7:30 p.m. first-round game against 6-14 Ulysses, a game that will have a hard time following the expected donnybrook between 16-4 Hays and 15-5 Buhler.

The title game is 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Smoky Valley goes to Clay Center for a Class 4A Division II sub-state.

On Thursday, the Viking girls (7-13) take on Chapman (10-10) at 6:00, which is followed by Clay Center (16-4) against Concordia (3-16). The championship game is 6 p.m. Saturday.

On the boys’ side, the 8-12 Viking boys play Chapman (6-14) at 6 p.m. Friday, with Concordia (12-7) taking on Clay Center (4-16) in the second game.

The finals are 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
