Loose meaning: Every vehicle is required to have liability insurance at the minimum at any time it is operated on any highway, roadway, or any area open to public use.

The problem Patrol Bureau sees most frequently during traffic contacts is failure to have current coverage verification available when asked for. Throw your expired documentation away and check to be sure it is up to date frequently. Providing current verification via electronic device is also acceptable, but again it must be produced when asked for.

The Officer shall cite the driver when current proof of insurance cannot be provided. Failure to provide proof of liability insurance is a non-moving violation. Fines start at $300 with $55.50 Municipal Court fee and may increase to $800 with more convictions. The court may dismiss any citation when a driver provides proof of coverage on the date the citation was issued.

The “Traffic Stop” appears on the McPherson Police Department's Facebook page Tuesdays to address topics of traffic enforcement in the City of McPherson. The Traffic Section of Patrol Bureau organizes the “Traffic Stop” and welcomes suggestions on topics to address. Please private message McPherson KS Police Department your traffic enforcement questions or call if any question requires an immediate answer on our non-emergency line: (620)245-1200.
