Defending Class 4A state champion McPherson High has garnered the No. 1 spot in the Kansas Tennis Coaches Association boys’ preseason poll.
The Bullpups, who have four players back from last year’s state championship team, are followed by the usual suspects. Independence is No. 2, with Wichita Collegiate, Topeka Hayden and Abilene rounding out the Top 5, while others receiving votes are Buhler, DeSoto and Andover Central.
Returning for the Bullpups are Nolan Schrader, Kento Aizawa, Andrew Snell and Kaden Stewart. Schrader and the graduated Gallagher Martin won the state doubles title last year, defeating Aizawa and the graduated Luke Williams in the finals. Snell and Stewart were fourth and ninth, respectively, in the state in singles last season.
The Hesston boys, also a defending state champion, are No. 1 in Class 3-2-1A. Next is Wichita Independent, followed by Kansas City Christian, Conway Springs and Central Plains. Others receiving votes are Sterling, Sacred Heart and Shawnee Maranatha.
