OTTAWA — McPherson College’s baseball team came up short in its bid for a weekend sweep with Ottawa University, but Saturday’s split gave the Bulldogs a 3-1 series victory.
After sweeping Friday’s twinbill, the Bulldogs made it three in a row in Game 1 Saturday by pounding the Braves, 10-2.
The Bulldogs had a three-run inning and three innings of two runs each, helped by seven Ottawa errors.
Lane Fleming picked up the win. Dylan Klava, Dylan Fontenot and Lucas Giesey all collected two hits, while Matt Bryan scored four runs.
McPherson High graduate Aaron Marshall accounted for the only two OU runs with a two-run homer.
Ottawa staved off the sweep by winning a walk-off 6-5 decision in the nightcap, overcoming an early 3-0 Bulldog lead. The Braves won the game on a Bulldog fielding error.
Trevor Haycock and Bryce Strecker had two hits apiece for the Bulldogs, who also received two RBIs from Reilly Martin.
Marshall had another homer for the Braves as he had three on the weekend.
The Bulldogs, who were 8-44 last season, are now 12-12 overall and 3-5 in the KCAC. They play crosstown rival Central Christian College in a single 7 p.m. game on Tuesday at Light Capital Diamond, then Saint Mary comes to town for games Saturday and Sunday.
