WINONA LAKE, Ind. — A harbinger of things to come occurred 3 minutes into the game.
Central Christian College’s top rebounder and second-leading scorer Alonzo Stafford went down with an injury, never to return. The Tigers, visibly shaken by the loss of their star jumping-jack forward, went on to lose to No. 1-seed Emmanuel College of Georgia 76-47 Wednesday in the first round of the NCCAA National Tournament.
The Tigers’ offense stalled in the first half, as they trailed 34-22 and things didn’t get a whole lot better after that.
Michael Gholston led the Tigers with 13 points, but CCC suffered from a 19-of-52 night from the field and was a frigid 4 of 13 at the line. The Tigers also turned it over 20 times.
Central, now 19-14, is playing this afternoon against Alice Lloyd College of Kentucky.
