Central Christian College’s softball team has crosstown rival McPherson College’s number.
For the second time this year, the Lady Tigers rallied in both games to sweep a doubleheader to retain city bragging rights.
On Wednesday at Wall Park, Central won the first game 4-3 after trailing 3-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Sydney Nelson’s RBI single drove in Cristina Insua in the seventh inning for the walk-off win.
Nelson was 3 for 4 in the game and Mandy Jacques had two hits and two RBIs. Amanda Connell was 3 for 3 for Mac, with Katie Holmes driving in two runs on two hits.
Kasi Kraus went the distance to pick up the win, fanning seven and not walking a batter. Sydney Lang pitched well for Mac, but took the defeat.
The second game was more elation for CCC and more heartbreak for Mac. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 10-9 lead, only to see the Lady Tigers answer with two in the bottom of the inning, including the walk-off hit by Lyssa Ritchhart that scored Morgan Hildebrandt. The winning rally came after Lang had retired the first two hitters of the inning.
Ritchhart had four hits for CCC and Kraus had three. Emily Davis collected three hits for Mac.
“Mark Twain said it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of fight in the dog,” CCC coach Mark Ritchhart said. “I was so impressed with the fight and belief that my team showed tonight. They were down in both games and came back in late innings to victory. This was a full team effort from start to finish. Everyone contributed to the success one way or another. They collectively never gave up and always showed faith in each other. This will be the main ingredient for our successful future."
Central is now 5-18 on the year, but 4-0 against Mac. The Lady Tigers play Friday at Sterling and then host Mid-America Christian on Saturday.
The Bulldogs sank to 4-20, with several close losses. They host Waldorf College at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wall Park.
