WINONA LAKE, Ind. — Central Christian College’s men’s basketball team fended off a late rush by Alice Lloyd College this afternoon to hang on for an 84-80 victory in the consolation round of the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament.
The Tigers were in lockdown defensive mode in the first half, compiling a 36-26 halftime lead. The second half saw the Eagles go off for 54 points, but the Tigers unfurled some firepower of their own to stay ahead.
All five Tiger starters scored in double figures, led by Sam Clayborn’s 22 points. Michael Gholston added 16, Daniel Nwosuh chipped in with 14, Ernest Burton tallied 12 and Kendric Warren chipped in with 10.
The Tigers without star forward Alonzo Stafford, who was injured in Wednesday’s first round and did not play.
The victory gave the Tigers a 20-win season as they are now 20-14.
Central will play Ohio Christian for fifth place at 6 p.m. Friday.
