McPherson College and Saint Mary split baseball games on Saturday at Grant Complex and will play two more today at Light Capital Diamond to complete the four-game series.
The first game was a pitching duel between Saint Mary’s Nic Amerio and Mac’s Dylan Klava. Amerio won the battle as the Spires were a 3-1 winner, doing all their damage in the first three innings.
Klava fanned seven in seven innings. Five different Bulldogs had one hit.
McPherson College could have some momentum going into today after an exciting 6-5 walk-off victory in Game 2 to earn the split as Lane Fleming’s single drove in Matt Bryan, who had singled and stolen second. The Bulldogs led 4-0 after an inning, but the Spires scored five unanswered runs to take a 5-4 lead. Mac tied it in the fourth and the won it in the seventh.
Blake Ware was the winner in relief. Fleming and Dylan Fontenot had two hits apiece for the Bulldogs and Klava stroked a two-run double.
The Bulldogs are now 4-6 in KCAC play and 14-13 overall as they are far surpassing last year’s 8-44 season.
