McPherson native Brad Underwood is heading back to the Big 12.

But this time as a head coach.

Underwood will be formally introduced on Wednesday as the new head basketball coach at Oklahoma State University, replacing Travis Ford.

"I named three things that I was looking for in the new head basketball coach at Oklahoma State: character, coaching style and fit," OSU Athletic Director Mike Holder said. "Brad Underwood gets the highest marks in each of those categories. He played in the Big Eight for Jack Hartman, a disciple of Henry Iba. He has coached and recruited in the Big 12, and has been very successful as a head coach in one of our prime recruiting grounds in the state of Texas. K-State is a sister institution with Oklahoma State in a lot of ways, so anyone who graduates from there and lives in Manhattan is probably going to connect quickly with our fans and our people. And as for character, everyone around him speaks of him as the great friend, father and person he is. In my opinion, Brad Underwood is going to be a great fit for Oklahoma State."

Underwood, 52, and a 1982 McPherson High graduate, has spent the past three years at Stephen F. Austin University, carving out an amazing 89-14 record, 55-1 in conference play. His Lumberjacks have qualified for the NCAA Tournament in each of his three seasons, winning two first-round games. They stunned VCU in the first round in 2014 and then last week shocked No. 3-seed West Virginia in the first round.

On Sunday, the Lumberjacks were 1.2 seconds away from advancing to the Sweet 16. Notre Dame rallied late and won the second-round game on a tip-in.

Underwood is no stranger to the Big 12, having played at Kansas State and also served as an assistant coach at KSU to Bob Huggins and Frank Martin. He later joined Martin for one year at South Carolina before moving on to Stephen F. Austin.

He is the son of Jan and the late Warren Underwood of McPherson.
