WINFIELD — Chris Kaufman of Winfield, one of the most popular basketball and football officials in Kansas, died this past weekend due to complications from brain cancer.

Kaufman, 61, had worked countless McPherson High football and basketball games during his 40-year career, including postseason games.

MHS basketball coach Kurt Kinnamon had visited Kaufman in the hospital a couple of months ago and noted he’ll not only be missed as an official, but he also said he was a tremendous person.

Kaufman had officiated 85 postseason games in basketball, football and baseball. He was the South Central Border League Commissioner, and a supervisor and programs director at Winfield’s correctional facility.

Kaufman had officiated into January, working the Valley Center Tournament when he complained of continued fatigue.

He is survived by his wife Jane, son John, and two daughters, Caroline and Alex.
