SV grad Cook takes 6th at nationals

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Former Smoky Valley Viking state wrestling champion Austin Cook came away with a sixth-place national finish in the recent NCAA Division III Championships.

Cook, a two-time state champion at Smoky Valley including a perfect record his senior year, competes for the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, which took sixth place in the team standings.

Cook was unseeded, but knocked off No. 7 William Gockel-Figge of New York University in the first round 12-4.

In the championship quarterfinals he clashed with Grant Wedepohl of Wisconsin-Platteville and won a 2-0 decision. In the championship semifinals he lost 11-1 to Messiah University’s Josh Thomson. He lost his final two matches in the consolation bracket.

Cook was 30-14 overall. 

He also earned National Wrestling Coaches Association Academic All-American honors by earning a 3.2 GPA.
