ROSE HILL — McPherson High’s softball team struggled in the field on Thursday, leading to a pair of losses to Rose Hill.
The Bullpups were defeated 7-5 in Game 1, then were outlasted 10-7 in Game 2.
“We had too many errors on the evening to earn a win,” said Mac coach Danica Fitzmorris, whose team is now 2-4 on the season. “I am really disappointed in our defensive effort. We can not come up with routine plays that should be made. What makes it an even harder pill to swallow is that we out-hit our opponents in the nightcap 17 to 13, leaving eight runners stranded and six errors. Game 1 we had 10 hits to their 12, but made three errors that put them ahead on the board. We are doing our job offensively, but our defense is keeping us from being in the win column.”
MHS’ Bailea Crist was 3 for 3 with two RBIs in Game 1. Mayci James added two hits.
In Game 2, Rose Hill jumped all over MHS for an 8-1 lead after two innings, but the Bullpups came back to make a game of it. Crist stayed on fire by going 4 for 5 with three RBIs, while James, Brooke Schrag, Chelsey Kerr and Teagan Pacey all had two hits.
The MHS JV team is still looking for its first win after an 0-2 day.
The Bullpups lost yet another one-run game in the opener when the Rockets walked it off for a 3-2 win. MHS rapped out 12 hits, but couldn’t bunch them together. Emily Smith was 4 for 4, while Sydney Boese and Gracie Burton had two hits apiece.
The Rockets won the second game 8-2 despite two hits by Halle Giddings.
MHS JV coach Lacey Morgan said the first game was frustrating because MHS left too many runners on base. She said the second game was more of the same as the Bullpups again out-hit the Rockets, but came up on the short end of the score.
The MHS teams are home on Monday to take on Circle.
