Another great day for MHS swimmers

SALINA — McPherson High girls swimming coach Abby Bradstreet decided to have a little fun with her Bullpup team on Thursday in the Salina South Invitational.

Bradstreet moved her swimmers around to different events, but the end result was still the same — another great day for the Bullpups.

MHS scored 373 points to finish behind only Newton, which is a top contender for Class 5A honors. The reservoir-deep Railers scored a whopping 537 points.

Salina South (313) was third, while Salina Central (212), Manhattan (197) and Sacred Heart (22) completed the order. MHS has now finished no worse than fourth in any meet this year and has been in the top half of all of them.

“Overall, this was a fun meet for our team,” Bradstreet said. “The girls were able to change up their events and swim some things they wouldn't normally do. They performed extremely well and we had 15 personal-best swims today.”

The 400 freestyle relay team became the latest to qualify for state, which included Maggie Leaf, Olivia Hansen, Megan Cutting and Katie Wurm.

Cutting and Wurm were outstanding individually, winning two events apiece. Shea Cook also scored an individual victory, while the 200 medley team of Leaf, Cutting, Wurm and Amanda Starkel captured a gold as well. Cutting and Wurm, who already have qualified for state, made it in even more events, Cutting in the 500 freestyle and Wurm in the 200 individual medley.

“All in all, we had fun and that's all that matters,” Bradstreet said.

The Bullpups will have a major test on Tuesday when they compete at Newton.
