Richard Southern has been hired as new Central Christian College men’s and women’s tennis coach.
Southern is from Andrews, Texas, and graduated from the University of the Southwest in 2012, where he played varsity tennis all four years. He has been at Southwestern College of Winfield of the KCAC since 2014 as an assistant.
The Southwestern men’s team has improved from seventh to fourth during his first two years. Meanwhile, the women’s team has gone from fifth to second and received votes in the national polls during the 2015 season, which was a first for the school. In 2015, he was recognized by his coaching peers as the ITA men’s Region IV Assistant Coach of the Year.
“I'm excited to introduce Richard Southern as the newest member of the Central Christian College athletic program,” CCC Athletics Director Steve “Twiggs” Reed said. “Coach Southern brings a visible enthusiasm for tennis and a deep passion to work and care for young men and women. I'm thrilled to have him as our new men’s and women’s tennis coach.”
The men’s program was once a regular at the NCCAA National Tournament and the women’s team was successful as late as 2014, but both have slipped in the past couple of years.
“I'm excited to join the coaching staff at CCC,” Southern said. “I want to thank Steve Reed and the school for giving me the opportunity to rebuild a once-successful program. This is an unbelievable opportunity for my fiancé, Raeann, and myself.”
He will finish out the season at Southwestern while trying to do some recruiting for the Tigers in his spare time. He will marry his fiancé Raeann Richardson in late July, and then hit the ground running Aug. 1, when he joins the Tiger coaching staff full time.
