GODDARD — McPherson High softball coach Danica Fitzmorris says until her team can get its defensive problems straightened out, it’s going to continue to struggle.

MHS reached the halfway point of its season on Friday losing two games in a road triangular. The Bullpups are 3-7, though a few of the losses could have gone the other way and the majority of the setbacks can be mostly contributed to their leaky defense.

MHS began Friday with a 17-5 loss to Salina Central.

“Once again our defense led us astray, but our offense followed in this game coming up cold with only four hits,” Fitzmorris said. “This one got away from us.”

The Bullpups were credited with five boots and Central tattooed the ball for 17 hits.

Sheridan Scott was the Bullpup offensive leader with two hits. Mayci James was credited with two RBIs.

In Game 2, the Bullpups were edged 12-10 by Goddard Eisenhower. The story of this game was All-Stater Chelsey Kerr injuring her shoulder in the first inning and having to exit and the Bullpups had six more errors. Bailea Crist was 3 for 4, while Stevie Stockham had two hits and drove in three runs.

“We have to find some consistency in our game,” Fitzmorris said. “It was an off-night for us offensively, which is usually not a concern. Tonight it was. Defensively, we can’t continue to post errors as we have and expect to win. We are beating ourselves up mentally and have to gain control of  that in order to gain back our confidence.”

MHS is back home on Monday to take on Buhler. First pitch at Grant Complex is 4 p.m.

The MHS JVs picked up their first win of the season with a 15-0 rout of Salina Central behind the shutout pitching of Addie Fitzmorris. Halle Giddings and Gracie Bruton drove in three runs apiece, while Giddings and Lexi Howard had two hits. MHS lost the second game 14-4 to Eisenhower and Bruton was again in the spotlight with two hits, one a double.

The Bullpups are 1-9.
