MARION — It was a McPherson County shootout for top honors on Friday in the Marion Invitational Track and Field Meet, as both McPherson High teams came in first and were followed in both divisions by Smoky Valley.

The highlight was McPherson High’s Elle Barrett breaking the MHS triple jump record by going 37-4 1/2. Amy Suenram leaped 36-7 1/2 for second, which actually tied the previous school record until Barrett broke it.

“What a great night,” MHS coach Jace Pavlovich said. “I was proud to watch our kids get after it once again. There are so many success stories from the evening. We finally won the Marion meet on the girls and guys side. The story of the night had to go to our girls triple jumpers. Kenzie Goering was in first place with a PR and jump of 35-11.5.  That is the best mark of our girls so far this year.  Then, Elle Barrett broke the school record with a jump of 37-4.5.  She broke Abby Stockstill's 2005 record of 36-7.5. Shortly after that, Amy Suenram tied the old school record of 36-7.5.  That is just one of many great performances on the evening.”

The Bullpup girls, again buoyed by the jumping events, scored 103 points with Smoky Valley second with 89. There were 15 schools in all.

MHS was 1-2-3 in the triple jump (Kenzie Goering was third), 1-2-4 in the long jump (Suenram, Barrett and Goering) and 1-2 in the high jump (Mandi Cooks with a terrific 5-5 and Megan Pedersen went 5-0).

Smoky Valley was led by Katie Adam’s win in the 3,200 and two relay teams, the 4 x 100 (Meridith Galloway, Maggie Lambert, Allison Rose and Amanda Behanna) and the 4 x 400 (Galloway, Rose, Lambert and Kate Deterding).

The MHS boys scored 90 points to outlast Smoky Valley (85) and AVCTL Division III rival El Dorado (83 1/3).

MHS had three firsts on the day — Spenser Wine in the 100 hurdles, Andric McGill in the high jump and Devin Cape in the triple jump.

The Smoky Valley boys can thank Holly Lindquist’s cross country team from the fall for being in the hunt. Long distance ace Calvin Shannon won the 1,600 and 3,200, and two of the distance relay teams also took first, both anchored by Shannon. Other runners on the 4 x 400 team included Matthew Rupert, Timmy Lambert and Carter Couchman, while others on the winning 4 x 800 were Couchman, Logan Windholz and Austin Lustfield. Windholz also had a second in the 800 as the Vikings used their cross country prowess to their advantage.
