STERLING — Smoky Valley’s softball team handed Sterling its first loss of the year during Tuesday’s doubleheader.
The Black Bears improved to 6-0 by rolling to an 11-1 first-game victory. Sterling scored six runs over the final two innings to break the game open.
The Vikings were held to three singles. Megan Sample took the loss.
In Game 2, the Vikings rebounded to earn the split by holding off Sterling, 8-7. A seven-run second inning propelled Smoky to a 7-0 lead and then it held off the Black Bears.
Jordan Otto was the winning pitcher and Sample came on for the save. Five Vikings had two hits each — Teagan Miller, Katie Bellah, Ally Karber, Jacque Hulse and Madi Mitchell.
The Vikings are now 5-3 on the season and play Friday at Hesston.
