NEWTON — McPherson High’s Jacob Lackey earned a medal during Tuesday’s Newton Invitational Golf Tournament at Sand Creek Station.

Lackey, who was first and second in his previous two meets, encountered some trouble on Nos. 16 and 17 or would have finished much higher than his eventual 14th place. He closed with an 83 and the Top 15 were honored.

MHS took eighth out of 12 teams with a 357 team score. Powerhouse Maize South, which had two of the top three finishers including medalist Cale Bontrager with a 74, shot a crisp 312 for a 13-stroke victory over Bishop Carroll. Ark City (345) was a distant third.

Other MHS scores were Kaden Warren (90), CJ Steiner (91), Drew Pyle (93), Casey Cheek (93) and Colten Gern (111).

MHS is off until April 22 when it plays at Salina.
