HESSTON — McPherson Middle School’s Invitational Track and Field Meet was held at Hesston on Thursday due to impending construction at McPherson Stadium, with the seventh-grade girls the highest MMS team finisher by taking third place.

The seventh-graders had three firsts, two of them in relays. Lexi Kynaston won the 100 meters for the lone individual first. Kynaston was part of the 4 x 100 relay team that took first along with Kenzee Godwin, Birkley Schwartz and Shelby Yowell. The 4 x 400 gold medal team included Godwin, Schwartz, Yowell and Kyla Hageman.

The eighth-grade girls took fourth. Laynee Schroeder had a big day by winning the two short sprints and Taylor Bruce won the 200 hurdles. The 4 x 200 relay team of Schroeder, Avery Howard, Peyton Johnson and Nicole Winsky was first as well.

The seventh-grade boys placed fourth. Brycen Labertew had a pair of seconds and ran on a second-place 4 x 100 relay team for the top Bullpup finishes.

The eighth-grade boys were sixth, with Cody Stufflebean winning the discus by more than 20 feet for the top performance.

“There are times as a coach where you walk away from a competition and the medals and results are handed to you and you forget about them immediately,” MMS coach TJ Jackson said. “The improvements we saw today. The PR's we saw today. The team spirit we saw today. In spite of a lack or proper practice facilities, proper equipment and ability to use a track that all of our tax money goes to the kids were great representatives of McPherson, and McPherson should want to give these kids more. To top it off at the end of the meet I saw one of the gutsiest performances by four different teams in the 4 x 400 I have ever seen.

“We didn't place first in any of them, but that never crossed my mind because I saw kids barely be able walk off that track, I saw kids who loved what they were just a part of, and I saw a group of kids who  just tore every ounce of effort from themselves for the betterment of their team in a sport that often idolizes the individual. For that I am thankful I am your coach and have the reminder of how great you kids are and will be. From your coaching staff we thank you for who you are.”
