SALINA — Nobody was probably more surprised by Casey Cheek’s second-place finish in the Salina South Invitational Golf Tournament on Friday than Casey Cheek.

The Bullpup senior has been struggling with his game all spring, but the Salina Muni proved to be the course for the beginning of his comeback.

Cheek’s 76 helped the Bullpups to their first team title of the year with a 327 total, nine shots better than Newton.

MHS’ Jacob Lackey was fifth with a 78. Other counting Bullpup scores were CJ Steiner (86) and Drew Pyle (87).

Rounding out the MHS lineup were Kaden Warren (88) and Colten Geren (104).

MHS coach Kurt Kinnamon, while thrilled with the team title, said he was especially pleased for Cheek, who has been working nonstop on his game during practice and hopes this signals a turnaround for the rest of the season.

Newton’s Max Brenneman took the medalist honor with a 74.

The Bullpups head to Derby on Monday.
