DERBY — The toughest feat for a golfer is to back up a great round with another one.
But McPherson High’s Casey Cheek did just that on Monday in the Derby Invitational.
Cheek, coming off a second-place finish at Salina last week with a 76, matched that score at Derby Country Club as he took sixth place.
With an eighth-place standing by Jacob Lackey and a 10th by CJ Steiner, the Bullpups shot a 330 to take third place among 10 teams.
Cheek had it to 2-under-par after 12 holes before encountering some problems. He still finished with a quality 37-39 for his 76.
Lackey also had it going, but was derailed by a quadruple bogey. He was 1-under on the front with a 35 and then shot a 42 for a 77.
Steiner had rounds of 42-43-85.
Other MHS scores were Drew Pyle (44-48-92), Kaden Warren (46-47-93) and Colten Geren (58-58-116).
Rose Hill’s Ryan Walker shot 72 for medalist honors. The Rockets, who had three of the top four scores, won with a 308. Peyton and Parker Austin, sons of Senior PGA star Woody Austin who has won on the tour in back-to-back weeks, were third and fourth, respectively.
MHS plays Friday at Hutchinson.
