That's the question Kansas Highway Patrolman Ben Gardner is asking on his twitter feed after giving the older transient a ride yesterday afternoon.
Officer Gardner on Monday picked up Merle near the Lindsborg exit on highway interstate 135. Merle was still making his way to the nearest exit after being dropped off on the interstate where he knew pedestrians are not allowed.
According to a story in the Salina Journal, Officer Gardner wasn't so much surprised to encounter a transient walking near an interstate exit as he was when Merle told him he was 81 years old and that he'd been walking across the United States ever since he dropped out of high school.
Gardner and another officer helped Merle get as far as McPherson and dropped him off along highway 81 where he could legally walk. Merle said he had come from Nebraska and was heading to Oklahoma, where he was hoping to be able to stay for an extended period of time.
If anyone happens to catch sight of Merle and wants to let Officer Gardner know, he can be found on twitter at https://twitter.com/TrooperBenKHP
