Thursday’s annual McPherson Invitational Track and Field Meet will actually take place 15 minutes to the north.
Lindsborg’s Bethany College will be the site of the meet. It was moved there after McPherson Stadium work was expected to shut down the press box.
MHS coach Jace Pavlovich believes both divisions will be top shelf.
“For the guys, Newton is stacked. They have at least one highly talented boy in every event,” Pavlovich said. “Valley Center has an uncharacteristically high amount of speed as well as some great distance runners. Of course, the Salina schools are strong as always. Our guys will have to fight and pick up some PR's to get themselves in the mix at the top.”
The MHS girls will be among the favorites, but Newton is expected to be the champion.
“Our girls team is as good as we have been since 2005,” Pavlovich said. “They continue to win meets. We will probably hold a few of our girls to a couple of events as they are battling through some minor injuries. Newton's girls are unreal. They have to be a favorite in 5A.”
The action gets under way at 3 p.m.
