Wichita Collegiate’s consistent depth overcame McPherson High’s singles stranglehold on Thursday as the Spartans captured the AVCTL JV Tennis Tournament at the McPherson High Tennis Complex.
MHS’ Patrick Munsey and Jace Kinnamon took first place at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, to lead the Bullpups. Munsey outlasted Collegiate’s Josh Fernandez 8-5 in his title match, while Kinnamon rolled past Collegiate’s Brayden Phipps 8-1 in the finals.
The Bullpups’ Thomas Smith and Lorenzo Cornelius were third at No. 2 doubles, while Trey Hett and Price Kramer were fourth at No. 1.
Collegiate won both doubles divisions to score 65 points and take first, while MHS tallied 57 for second.
Other team scores were Buhler (55), Winfield (37), El Dorado (27), Wellington (17), Augusta (11) and Circle (11).
“We were hoping that by pulling two firsts on singles that we could sneak the victory over Collegiate,” MHS JV coach Noah Lindfors said. “We had all divisions in the semifinals, but couldn't get our doubles to the finals. I feel a majority of our points lost were unforced errors or trying to over-hit. We are very pleased with their positive attitude after loses, trying to focus on what they can improve on.”
