Here we go again.
McPherson High and Wichita Collegiate are expected to battle it out here Monday for the AVCTL Division III-IV tennis title when the tournament is contested at the MHS Tennis Complex.
The serving and volleying begins at 10 a.m. Spectators are more than welcomed to come watch some of the best tennis players in the state.
MHS was No. 1 and Collegiate No. 2 in the most recent Class 4A state poll, but when the teams last hooked up it was the Spartans who came away with a victory by outlasting the Bullpups by a scant two points in Collegiate’s Tournament of Champions.
But don’t count out Winfield, which has a solid team and has been periodically ranked in Class 4A. Buhler also should have some capable entries as the Top 4 teams look solid.
Rounding out the field are Augusta, Circle, El Dorado and Wellington.
The Bullpups have won all but one of the tournaments they have entered this year. Collegiate has a legendary program, having secured 21 state championships and has the necessary depth to match the Bullpups.
MHS’ consistency has been its strength, with singles players Jarrod Nowak and Andrew Snell among the Top 10 in the state, while Nolan Schrader and Kento Aizawa are expected to contend for the state doubles title. The Bullpups’ other doubles team of Kaden Stewart and Hadley Hageman would be a No. 1 entry for many schools.
