For 20 minutes here Monday, the last thing on the minds of the McPherson High softball team was defeating Andale-Garden Plain.

Senior standout Chelsey Kerr was down on the field for a long time after a first-base collision. Paramedics were on the scene and she finally was taken off the field on a stretcher with a back injury, though reports indicate she’ll be OK and there’s no spine damage.

When it was finally time to get back to softball, the Bullpups put up good fights in both games to the highly touted Indians, only to lose 5-1 and 7-4. Andale-Garden Plain had entered the day with a 12-2 record.

Andale-Garden Plain scored three runs in the top of the first in Game 1, but MHS pitcher Bailea Crist pitched well the rest of the way.

Gracy Feil had two hits for MHS and Teagan Pacey scored the only run.

The Bullpups showed a lot of grit in Game 2 after trailing 6-0 after three innings. They scored three runs in the fourth and another in the sixth against their old nemesis.

Crist was 3 for 4 from her leadoff spot and drove in a run. Addie Fitzmorris took the loss, but Elle Schrag threw five innings where she allowed only one earned run.

MHS, now 7-11, plays Thursday at Winfield.

The MHS JVs lost both games.

Game 1 went to Andale-Garden Plain 18-9 even though Halle Giddings was 3 for 3 with four runs scored. Emily Smith, Lexi Howard and Morgan Jones all picked up two hits. MHS lost Game 2 13-0 despite seven players coming up with one hit apiece.
