HESSTON — Judging by the results of the Hesston Invitational Track and Field Meet on Thursday, it was easy to see why Smoky Valley had such a strong boys cross country team this past fall.

The Vikings scored monster points in the distance events to key their championship with 118 points, with Cheney second with 84 and Hesston one more back with 83.

The Vikes’ Calvin Shannon was nothing short of spectacular with wins in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters, while several of his teammates also placed high. Smoky’s distance relay teams also scored heavy points and the Vikings scored good numbers in the hurdle events.

Hesston’s lone win came from its 4 x 800 relay of Jon Weber, Luccus Schmucker, Zach Esau and Austin Bollinger as they outlasted the Vikings.

The Smoky Valley girls (65) and Hesston (55) finished behind Garden Plain (107), Concordia (92) and Marion (74). Smoky Valley’s 4 x 800 relay team of Kate Deterding, Sophia Peterson, Katie Adam and Maggie Lambert took first, while Hesston was led by sprinter Taylor Valdez, who doubled in the 100 and 200.
