SALINA — McPherson High’s track and field team played in the big leagues on Friday in the Salina Central Invitational.

In a field that glistened with Class 6A and 5A powerhouses and probable state placers, the MHS girls came away with a strong third-place finish, scoring 72 points to finish behind 6A staples Junction City (95 1/2) and Manhattan (77 1/2).

The MHS boys were 10th with 13, with Junction City scoring 97 for the title.

The MHS girls again relied on the three jumping events for chunks of points. Elle Barrett led a 1-3-4 finish in the triple jump (Amy Suenram and Kenzie Goering were the other two), MHS was second (Barrett) and third (Suenram) in the long jump while Megan Pedersen and Mandi Cooks tied for second in the high jump. Those events alone accounted 48 of the points.

Klayton Goering and Kyle Smith both had fourths in the 110 hurdles and 200 meters, respectively, to lead the boys.
