WINFIELD — It’s often said that a golf tournament doesn’t really begin until the back nine.
McPherson High had the lead at the halfway point of Monday’s AVCTL Division III Tournament at Quail Ridge, but couldn’t sustain the momentum and wound up taking third.
In somewhat of a surprise, Augusta won the team title with a 335, while prohibitive favorite Rose Hill was second with 341, just four shots up on MHS.
Rounding out the order were Buhler (351), Winfield (357) and El Dorado (400).
MHS’ Jacob Lackey tied for third with a 79. Also for MHS, CJ Steiner tied for sixth with an 82. Steiner shot a 37 on his front nine as he was in the title hunt before encountering some back-nine problems.
Lackey earned first-team AVCTL Division III honors, while Steiner made the second team.
Other MHS scores were Kaden Warren (91), Drew Pyle (93), Casey Cheek (99) and Colten Geren (105).
MHS coach Kurt Kinnamon said the course was set up extremely difficult, with tough pin placements and high rough.
Augusta’s Jake Becker and Winfield’s Andy Burger shot the low scores with matching 78s.
