McPherson High’s track and field team heads to Augusta on Friday for the AVCTL Division III Championships.

The Bullpup girls probably have the better shot of pulling off a league title.

“Our girls are going to be pushed in a smaller-meet setting,” MHS coach Jace Pavlovich said. “We know our state-level performers will continue to do well. Our younger girls are going to have to PR and grab some points wherever they may be.”

Mandi Cooks, one of the state’s better high jumpers, is hampered by a sore knee, but MHS should still score a lot of points in the three jumping events. Megan Pedersen will score big points in the high jump, while Amy Suenram, Elle Barrett and Kenzie Goering have been mainstays in the long and triple jumps.

The Bullpup boys are probably a year away from contending for the title, but the youngsters will gain experience that will come in handy down the road.

“Our guys have a tough task,” Pavlovich said. “Buhler is the odds-on favorite. They have four kids that will place first in multiple events.  If our throwers continue to PR and our 4 x 8 can get some points, we have a chance to finish close to the top. It's always hard to tell what frame of mind high school kids will be in at this point in the spring.  Our kids have been pretty focused and we hope that continues through these last 3 weeks.”

Meet time is 3:30 p.m.
