Hesston doubles team goes 2-0 at state on Friday

WICHITA — Hesston High’s Grant Dahlsten and Garrett Roth won their first two matches in the Class 3-2-1A State Tennis Tournament on Friday to advance to the semifinals.

They were a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Derek Douglas and Denver Hartson of Chaparral in their first match, then dispatched with Grant Cantrell and Spencer Kimmell of South Barber 6-2, 6-0 in the quarters.

The Swather doubles team of Kendrick Weaver and Jorge Morales went 1-1, winning 6-3, 6-1 over Ryan Shamburg and Kyle Tollefson of Hiawatha. The loss was 6-3, 6-2 to Jed Chitwood and Derek Pauly of Conway Springs.

Singles player Daniel Holthus lost 7-6 (7-3 tiebreaker) 6-2 to Joseph Evans of Scott City in the first round.

The Swathers are in a battle with Central Plains for the title. The tournament wraps up today.
