EL DORADO — Four first-place finishes sparked the McPherson High girls swimming team to an upper-division standing in the AVCTL Division II-III-IV Championships on Saturday.

Megan Cutting was a double league champion by winning the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, while Katie Wurm won the 50 freestyle.

The Bullpups also prevailed in the 200 freestyle relay that included Cutting, Wurm, Maggie Leaf and Olivia Hansen.

MHS didn’t have the sheer number of swimmers to challenge runaway winner Maize South (480), but it did give Winfield (287.5) and Andover (275) a good run for second. Both of those schools had far more swimmers as well, but MHS still scored 263 points to be competitive.

“I could not be more proud of how our team performed today at league,” MHS coach Abby Bradstreet said. “These girls have so much heart and have been working hard all season and to see how much time was dropped today is incredible. As a team we placed fourth and I am very pleased with that. Second through fourth place was close all day. Our team earned Top 3 finishes in over half of the events, but due to our small size it is hard to compete with the larger numbers the other teams have.”

The Bullpups now tune up for the state meet. There are still state consideration times to be processed but at this point here are the MHS qualifiers:

• Katie Wurm

• Megan Cutting

• Shea Cook

• Maggie Leaf

• Olivia Hansen

• Amanda Starkel

• Macy Hubbard

• Lindsey Moore

“Every single one of the girls performed amazing today and I am so excited to see what we can accomplish at state next weekend,” Bradstreet said.
