CHENEY — A 347 score normally doesn’t qualify a golf team for state, but for Hesston on Monday during the soggy Class 3A Regional Tournament it was gold.
Conditions were almost unplayable as golfers had a hard time hanging on to the club at times because of the steady rain and no player was able to break 80 at difficult Cherry Oaks.
Hesston best conquered the elements as it claimed four of the six-best scores, led by Trey Denno with an 85, good for third place. Grant Brenneman won a playoff from teammate Jordan Roth for fourth after both shot 87s, with Tanner Bachman taking sixth with 88. For good measure, Trevor Koehn’s score of 90 was ninth, but wasn’t needed. Tyler Bachman added a 97.
Cheney’s 353 earned the Cardinals the other state qualifying spot. Sedgwick’s Owen Gartner was medalist with an 80, one stroke better than Connor Lies of Cheney.
Hesston and Cheney move on to the state meet on Monday in Salina.
