MHS swimmers excited for state meet

McPherson High’s girls swimming team has operated at peak efficiency all season and Bullpup coach Abby Bradstreet sees no reason for that to change on Friday and Saturday in the Kansas State Championships in Topeka.

The Bullpups, despite their small roster numbers when compared to many of their opponents, have finished in the upper half of every meet they have competed in except for one, and that was a day when Bradstreet had only half her team due to academic commitments.

The Bullpups have qualified swimmers in eight events.

“All of us are anxiously awaiting the state meet on Friday and Saturday,” Bradstreet said. “We've done all of the preparation, now we are ready to have fun and see what we can do at this meet. The girls have set their goals and expectations high for themselves and we are aiming to make the Top 16 in all three relays.”

The Top 8 swimmers in preliminaries make the finals, with the next eight to swim on Saturday in the consolation round. It is always the hope to get everybody to Saturday and Bradstreet believes the Bullpups could have a busy final day.

“Our 200 freestyle relay is a little over a second away from breaking the MHS school record and I know the girls are excited to see if they can break it this weekend,” Bradstreet said. “Katie Wurm and Megan Cutting are also hoping for some Top 8 finishes, Katie especially in the 100 free is shooting for Top 3.”

No matter how her team performs, Bradstreet said this has been a year to remember.

“This is such a great group of girls and they are all so talented,” she said. “As a team we are aiming to place in the top half of the meet. I am so proud of these ladies for making it this far and can't wait to see how they perform.”

Of course at state, MHS will be competing against 5A schools as well as those in classes 4-1A. Class 6A has its own meet.

Here are the MHS entries:
