HOISINGTON — Smoky Valley’s softball team came up one game short of advancing to the Class 4A Division II State Tournament.
The Vikings outlasted Hoisington 7-6 in the first round of regional play on Wednesday, but then lost a 15-0 verdict to powerful Haven in the championship game.
In the first game, the Vikings led 7-1 before the Cardinals made a spirited comeback with three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Leaders for the Vikings were Megan Sample (three hits, one a double, two RBIs), Teagan Miller (two hits), Kelsie Anderson (double) and Katie Bellah (two hits, two runs).
Sample was the winning pitcher.
The Vikings, however, were no match for powerhouse Haven, which ended the game in the third inning. The Wildcats scored three in the first, seven in the second and five in the third as they rode a three-home-run attack.
Sample, Halle McClure and Jacque Hulse all had hits for the Vikings.
Smoky Valley finished the year 12-10.
